Just like every class of students, every teacher and paraeducator partnership is unique. Roles and responsibilities are constantly changing; there are no clear and specific roles and responsibilities for every classroom in every school. Because it all comes down to the needs of the student and their IEP, it is important to remember to be flexible in your roles in the classroom so you can adjust to what will best benefit your students.
While the specific descriptions of responsibilities are decided by individual states, local agencies, and respective campuses, roles can be divided into a few specific areas like behavior supports, instruction, or organization.
For teachers, organizational responsibilities include planning weekly schedules, lesson plans, and classroom activities, along with modifying those schedules and meeting individual student needs. They also ensure all team members have access to required records and information and communicate any student needs or relevant concerns about safety and welfare.
For paraeducators developing organizational skills, responsibilities can include implementing lesson plans and activities under the direct supervision of the teacher, helping students follow their schedules, or assisting in collecting and recording attendance information.
What’s the difference?
For the most part, the responsibility of a teacher is to manage the classroom and other staff. For the paraeducator, responsibilities mainly include supporting the teacher and assisting the students in their studies.
But what about responsibilities shared between the two?
Teachers and paraeducators are both responsible for maintaining confidentiality of student records and information. They also share the role of maintaining a clean, clutter-free, and safe classroom environment.
