Description
A centers approach to teaching offers gifted students autonomy, choice, and differentiation in ways that challenge and stretch them individually. In this course, Erin Muck shares how she uses a centers approach in her language arts classroom with the goal of helping you make it work in your classroom.
The centers approach Ms. Muck uses and developed herself is called “The READ System.” She will walk you through the following:
- The power and advantages of using centers in your classroom
- Examples of what centers might look like in your classroom
- The specific benefits of using centers with your gifted students
She covers classroom setup, classroom organization, and demonstrates stations in action.
This course meets National Association for Gifted Children Teacher Preparation Standards 1.2, 2.1, and 2.1, as well as Ohio Department of Education competencies a, b, and c.

This course was top-notch and everything I hope to expect from future courses. The teacher was very quick and to the point. The photographs of her classroom help with visualizing how the centers work. The examples of the handouts give a good starting point so that I can create my own or edit to begin my own centers.

I have not used the READ rotation exactly as described, but I have used similar small-group reading rotations in my classroom. I have seen that students stay more engaged, get targeted support based on their needs, and develop stronger reading skills through consistent, focused practice. To implement READ or a similar model, I would need to plan clear groupings, schedule rotations efficiently, and prepare materials for each station ahead of time. Organizational structures such as timers, clear expectations for independent work, and tracking student progress would be essential to ensure the rotation runs smoothly and effectively.

Martha – ASHTABULA AREA CITY (verified owner) –
Great information and explanation of how the READ stations are implemented by this teacher. I also appreciate that this is coming from a classroom teacher who is still in a classroom. I did not give it a 5 star, because this would be very difficult to do with resources that are provided by the school. Asking teachers to come up with so many supplemental resources and materials and then the time involved makes this a lot of extra time and money.
Kelsy – BEXLEY CITY (verified owner) –
While I see the benefits, I do think this should be geared toward later elementary and beyond. I think First Graders have a difficult time doing independent work so it would be really hard for me!
