Description
When working with students from a low-income community, Dr. Joyce Juntune discovered that some of the students didn’t know the word for "train" or how to describe what it did — even though the train tracks ran through the middle of their neighborhood! This clearly demonstrated the challenges these students faced. No one had described or explained to them a prominent feature of their lives, so they did not possess the language to express it themselves.
In this 1-hour course, teachers will learn:
- Why having a complex language structure is essential to academic achievement
- Strategies for building complex language
