There were a wealth of interesting ideas to try to get students more excited about reading and the visuals of each that she had to go along with her talk as examples made the suggestions very clear.

I enjoyed this course and found it very helpful. It gave me useful ideas for encouraging students to read for pleasure, such as using book wish lists, graphic novels, and reading events like reading marathons. The course reminded me how important motivation and choice are in helping students develop a love of reading. As a teacher, I can use many of these strategies in my classroom. I would recommend this course to other educators who want practical ways to inspire students to read more.

Definitely a lot of strategies for how to get students interested in developing a more sustained interest in reading. I think a lot of her advice is centered around primary school though, not sure how feasible it would be to do some of these things in a secondary style setting, where teachers only see students for anywhere from 50-60 minutes a day and they have 7-8+ classes that they go to. A lot of teachers would also be working with tightly defined budgets and anything that was not curriculum-aligned would have a hard time getting approved by the district or department, even if it is something that would help students develop a closer affinity to reading.

This course was very intriguing. I have held a couple reading events at school and find it to always excite the students. I can’t wait to try a few of these others.
