Description
During this 1-hour course, Dr. Juntune shares the findings of research started at Texas A&M University and the interventions being implemented in El Paso ISD to change the way we view and serve gifted students from poverty.
In this course you will learn three steps to improving success rates for low SES:
- Mind Sketching: A teaching technique that encourages students to sketch out the concept behind their answer while they come up with the words to communicate it.
- Building Verbal Intelligence: Children living in poverty have a simple language structure and we must give them a complex language structure.
- How to design a Gifted Program Specifically For These Students

It seemed a little long compared to other trainings similar to this one. I did find the training to be helpful with regard to a new understanding of intelligence and how my SES students may need alot of support. It gave me a better understand of the thinking that if we increase verbal intelligence, learning will take care of itself! I would take the training again, but would hope for 2 hour credit, instead of 1.

This course had the answer to a question I have been asking for years. I could not understand what was missing for my students. I would say it was a “vocabulary” issue. They didn’t know what the words in a story or a question meant. This really helped me understand the real problem more.

This is a great training. It helped me reflect on my own teaching. I was able to reflect on the responses I get in my classroom. I can now plan so that student responses are in complete sentences. It reminds me of the importance of open ended questions that allow students time to internalize and not only memorize but paraphrase information so that it is their own product.

The course Building Verbal Intelligence (Part 1): Opening the Doors of Opportunity for Low SES Gifted Students highlights how language development can empower students from low socioeconomic backgrounds to reach their full potential. It emphasizes the importance of providing equal access to rich vocabulary experiences and verbal learning opportunities that nurture giftedness. I think this course is inspiring because it shows how educators can use language-based strategies to bridge opportunity gaps, build confidence, and open pathways for academic and personal success. It reminds us that verbal intelligence is not only about words but also about unlocking potential and opportunity.

I think this course was great in opening our eyes as educators in how to view our students with a broader lens and take into consideration their nonverbal intelligence as incentive to build their verbal skills so that we can tap into their full potential, especially when working with low-SES and EB students.
Carla – PROSPER ISD (verified owner) –
