There are many complex reasons why students from low-income backgrounds struggle academically. The verbal intelligence gap between low-income students and the rest of their peers demonstrates the effect of all those reasons. Low-income students struggle with verbal memory and lack the verbal skills of middle-class students. When these students cannot remember instructions and they lack the verbal skills to recount information, it makes sense that they would struggle academically.

In Closing the Achievement Gap for Students Raised in Poverty – Intelligence and Achievement, Dr. Joyce Juntune explores the reasons and the effects of the gap in verbal skills for students raised in poverty. She explains three skills that will help to bridge this gap: using nonverbal skills to build verbal skills (mindsketching), building complex language, and building verbal memory.
