Description

Identifying and retaining gifted students is important for helping them thrive, but some school districts have trouble identifying gifted students who come from diverse backgrounds. Clint Rodriguez, a Secondary GT Specialist in Richardson ISD, says that the key to making sure all gifted students are properly supported lies in partnering with educators in charge of AVID, SPED, and ESL

Since every student has unique needs, educators can’t use a one-size-fits-all approach to GT.

Rather than competing with each other for resources, Mr. Rodriguez says that the best way to support students is for all educators in charge of special groups to work together to provide services.

After taking this 1-hour course presented by TAGT, you’ll discover:

  • Common challenges of identifying gifted students
  • How to partner for equity
  • Strategies for identifying gifted students

Love the idea of identifying students from other “labels” ( SpEd, 504, ESL, AVID). Would really like to see further training on identifying and assessing ESL students who are not English-fluent yet!

  27. Cynthia – WESLACO ISD (verified owner)

Very informative, but try to focus on the positives of everyone. As a counselor, I was taken back by your comments of Counselors in general. Sometimes we encounter one person who leaves a negative perspective, but try not to have that persona of all Counselors’ not being knowledgeable when it comes to being an advocate for ALL students.

we do not have the “avid” program at my school, so this is not a term I am familiar with

  39. Sheree – Private Pay (verified owner)

I think this course is very good for getting school staff and administrators to recognize that gifted students can be twice exceptional and part of other populations, such as SPED, AVID, ELL, and socioeconomically disadvantaged. It helps us all to remember that we need to look for gifted students in all populations. It also gives some strategies and points to consider for finding those students in other, less considered populations before the testing and identification process begins, so that we don’t leave out students that should be considered.
