Description

Problem-solving can be difficult, even for gifted students. This is why it’s important that each student has a "tool belt" of problem-solving strategies. Many of the strategies presented in this session will force students to change their normal thinking patterns and approach each problem in a different way.

You will leave this session with many unique problem-solving techniques that will help all students be more successful in math contests and on tests – including district achievement, SAT, and ACT tests. Each participant will conclude the session with 10 math problems that they can take back and implement immediately in their classroom. These problems will help teachers both interest and challenge their students of all ages.

In this 1-hour course, you will learn:

  • How to present challenging and engaging math problems
  • The power of exponents
  • How to solve problems with a function machine
  • About the 2-10 method
  • The language of algebra and how to solve real-life problems
  • Basic probability and counterintuitive problems
  • How to teach probability in younger grades

It was a little hard to fully understand as a non-math person. He went fast. I could do the in/out machine once he set up the process, but I’m not sure how I’d do that for my kids…so maybe an explanation for that would have been helpful. Also, I teach third grade, so it was harder for me to see how to use this for my kiddos. A higher grade level would be better.

  47. Sarah – PROSPER ISD (verified owner)

This was a great way of seeing how to make mathematical problem solving make sense to students at various levels. I was really engaged, challenge, and intrigued!
