I loved how she explained “guided reading!” Teaching students to read is one thing, but to get them to establish a purpose makes it so much more meaningful. Dissecting a read allows for a deeper understanding.

  18. Janet – LOS FRESNOS CISD (verified owner)

    This was a great course.

  19. Katrina – Private Pay (verified owner)

I am shocked and concerned that this is part of the gifted training. There is so much research and scientific data about the science of reading and Marie Clay’s method’s aren’t it. They have actually been found to cause damage and hinder reading in students in later years. Whole language does not work for most students. Students need implicit phonological instruction and Guided reading throws that out the window. It is shocking to me that Texas has teachers take the “Science of Teaching Reading” exam and then still teaches Marie Clay’s methods, which are not research based, best practices, etc. I’m not saying that teaching comprehension is wrong, analyzing text are wrong, but for an instructor to say “Do we read by sounds? No, no” is appalling.
