Have you ever glanced at a piece of mail and known exactly what it was without reading the full text? That skill is part of your schema, the experiences you’ve had and inferences you can make to give meaning to text. Reading is a skill that encompasses far more than phonemic awareness. Learn how to guide your gifted students to create dynamic meaning from their readings.
In this 1-hour course, you will learn to:
  • Understand gifted students’ unique social and emotional needs
  • Teach students to draw from schema and text to create meaning
  • Use running records to hone in on reading problemss

    Thank you for letting me know that GT kids can recall words and read but are afraid to apply what they know to comprehend the text as shown by your running records. Teachers must whet their appetites for trying to figure out the text as they go along and understand what the author was trying to convey at any point in the story. They get excited; “I inferred to predict but is my prediction right or wrong and will my prediction change as I continue reading.” Reading to comprehend becomes a joy and they want more of it!
